Alexandria City Council Delays Decision On Fulton Hotel Management
The Alexandria City Council has delayed action for two weeks on two items pertaining to management of the Alexander Fulton Hotel.
The council on Tuesday was considering whether to extend the city’s current management agreement with Noble Hospitality, which expired at the end of February and will roll over on a monthly basis, or authorize Mayor Jacques Roy to enter into a new management agreement with Hospitality Initiatives Partnership.
Roy said he had expected the city to reach a final deal on Tuesday with HIP, which is planning to purchase the shuttered Hotel Bentley, which has been closed since 2004, and the Alexander Fulton, which has been bankrupt since December 2008, as well as take over management of the city-owned Alexandria Riverfront Center. All are located downtown.
The mayor, however, said that deal had not yet come together on Tuesday as he expected.
In addition, the city faces a 10 a.m. hearing today in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Alexandria on its motion for summary judgment in its lawsuit with Capital One, which is claiming rights to the Alexander Fulton lodging tower.
District 2 Councilman Everett Hobbs and District 3 Councilman Jonathan Goins, two members of the council’s Legal Committee, said they would prefer to delay the item for two weeks to see if HIP signs its agreement with the city and to see what comes out of today’s bankruptcy hearing.
“To be honest, I’d like to see what happens (today),” Hobbs said.
District 1 Councilman Ed Larvadain III said he hopes the city can find some resolution soon on the Alexander Fulton. “We have to be careful with the money we keep putting into the hotel,” Larvadain said.
