Palm Beach County commissioners chose The Related Cos. to build a 400-room hotel next to the downtown convention center, relaunching a project beset by corruption and years of delay.

Commissioners are expected to vote on a financing agreement in May.

“Related is thrilled to have been selected as the developer of the convention center hotel in West Palm Beach and to continue to realize the CityPlace master plan,” Stephen M. Ross, Chairman and CEO of Related Cos., said in a statement Tuesday. “The development will create over 600 much-needed jobs and give West Palm Beach an important edge in the very competitive meetings and hospitality sectors.”

Under the Related proposal, the 15-story hotel could eventually be expanded if there is demand for additional rooms, county administrators said.

The project is expected to create more than 360 construction jobs, and about 300 when the hotel opens in 2014.
